VITILIGO SURGERY
If light therapy and medications haven’t worked or adults whose vitiligo has been stable (not changed) for at least 6 months. then the best options is vitiligo surgery. It is not for children, not for people who scar easily or develop keloids (scars that rise above the skin). Different surgical procedures are available. Most involve removing skin with your natural colour or skin cells and placing these where you need color. Effective for 90% to 95% of patients.
Techniques
The following techniques are intended to even out skin tone by restoring colour:
- Skin grafting. In this procedure, your doctor transfers very small sections of your healthy, pigmented skin to areas that have lost pigment. This procedure is sometimes used if you have small patches of vitiligo.
- Blister grafting. In this procedure, your doctor creates blisters on your pigmented skin, usually with suction, and then transplants the tops of the blisters to discoloured skin.
